Radar assistance involves transmitting instructions from shore to the captains of certain vessels transiting the section of the estuary located downstream of Pointe of Grave. These instructions are provided exclusively by a maritime pilot, and only in good weather.

III. Implementation Procedures
The Gironde Estuary is covered by a radar surveillance system. Port officers are responsible for monitoring the area, for identifying and controlling vessels arriving at and departing from the various ports in the estuary. The equipment made available to the Gironde Pilot Station enables pilots to remotely perform their duties of assisting vessels with navigation in accordance with the station’s local regulations.
