Channeling (76 miles from Bordeaux to the sea) is a significant part of our work, particularly given the presence of shoals (shallow waters) which crossing requires special attention.
The Dredged Channel, classified as an “open muddy fairway,” is 41 nautical miles long and extends to Bordeaux. Its bathymetry is monitored monthly by the GMPB services; the analysis of the soundings allows us to issue the maximum permissible draughts for all port terminals (values available at the GMPB Harbor Master’s Office).
Pilots use in particular autonomous navigation equipment (PPU) to monitor the vessel’s position and speed in relation to tide height measurements.Les pilotes utilisent notamment des équipements autonomes de navigation (PPU).
Our navigation standards are based on internal statistical studies, model tank testing (Navigation in muddy channels, SOGREAH 1991), and theoretical studies conducted by Dr. Barras.
